With the latest beta update of the ChatGPT app for Android, the OpenAI-developed chatbot can now replace Gemini as your default digital assistant on Android.
If you go through this step, you will then be able to invoke ChatGPT by long-pressing the home button (if you use the three-button navigation bar) or swiping up from either bottom corner (if you use gesture navigation). If you have that setting enabled, you can also long-press the power button to bring it up.
ChatGPT as the default digital assistant app
If you invoke ChatGPT using these methods, it will automatically launch into its voice mode. That said, you can’t use a hotword (like you can “Hey, Google” for Gemini) to bring up ChatGPT, as that would require access to some privileged APIs that are only available to trusted, preinstalled apps.
It’s unclear how long it will take for this to make it out of beta, so if you’re not using the beta version of the ChatGPT app for Android, a bit of a wait might still be required in order to use ChatGPT instead of Gemini. But it is coming.
